Watch Battery Life Claims: How to Test a 3 ATM Watch

·0086 Gifts Team·5 min read

A two-year battery life claim on a 3 ATM quartz watch is an arithmetic statement, not a warranty. It says: this movement draws an average current low enough to empty a cell of this capacity in about 730 days. You can check that claim on the bench in half an hour, with a microamp meter and one sample, before you accept the number on a gift box.

Below is the arithmetic, how to measure the current without damaging the movement, and what a 3 ATM rating does and does not prove about the same watch.

The arithmetic behind a two-year claim

A two-year watch battery claim is capacity divided by current. Here is how to check it.

The number to multiply is capacity divided by average current. A silver oxide cell of the SR626SW family holds roughly 25 to 30 mAh at 1.55 V. A three-hand quartz movement typically draws between 1 and 2 microamps. Take the middle of both ranges: 27 mAh is 27,000 microamp-hours, so at 1.5 µA the cell lasts about 18,000 hours, or just over two years.

That is the whole claim. Anything a supplier says beyond it — "two to three years", "long life", "premium cell" — has to come out of those two numbers. If a quote promises three years on the same cell, the movement has to average under 1 µA, and you should ask what the measured figure is. If nobody has measured it, the claim is a guess with a marketing department behind it.

Measure standby current without opening the movement

You need a meter that reads microamps, a 1.55 V supply or the watch's own cell, and a way to break the circuit. The clean method uses a battery insulator: a thin plastic shim with a strip of copper tape on one face, inserted between the cell and its contact, so the strip becomes the only path. Connect the meter in series across the shim and the movement runs through the meter.

Read the current for at least sixty seconds, because a sweep second hand draws in pulses and a short reading catches a peak or a trough rather than the average. Write down the average, not the lowest number you saw. Anything under 2 µA with the seconds hand running is consistent with a two-year claim on a cell of this size; 3 µA and above halves the life, and a reading that climbs steadily while you watch means the coil or the circuit has a fault.

Do this on five watches from the batch, not one. Movement-to-movement spread is real, and a batch where four read 1.2 µA and one reads 2.8 µA has a component problem rather than a specification problem.

What 3 ATM actually certifies, and what it does not

Three atmospheres is a static pressure test at roughly 3 bar, equivalent to 30 metres of still water. It is a splash and rain rating. It is not a rating for swimming, and it is not a rating for pressing a button or pulling the crown while the watch is wet, which is how most water damage actually happens.

Test it as a pressure test, not as a dip. A 30-metre static hold for ten minutes at 3 bar, with the caseback and crown as delivered, then a check for fogging under the crystal and for water at the gasket seat after the case is opened. A watch that fogs an hour after the test has failed even if no water was visible at the end of it. If a supplier offers no pressure test at all, the 3 ATM marking on the dial is a printing decision.

Three more things that eat the number

Backlight and chime. A one-second backlight at 10 mA uses as much charge as the movement uses in nearly two hours. A watch with a light or an hourly chime cannot be quoted on standby current alone; the claim has to state how many activations per day it assumes.

Cell chemistry. Silver oxide holds a flat 1.55 V across most of its life. An alkaline cell of the same size starts near 1.5 V and sags as it discharges, which a quartz movement shows as a slowing rate or a two-second jump of the seconds hand. A quote that says "button cell" without naming the chemistry is not a life claim at all.

Storage before sale. A watch that sits in a warehouse with the crown pulled or the movement running burns part of its life before the customer opens the box. Ask whether the cell is inserted at assembly or at packing, and whether there is a pull-tab.

Three tests are needed because none of them answers more than two of the six claims on the box.

Run the sample for thirty days before you commit

Bench current tells you the ceiling; a thirty-day run tells you whether the batch behaves like the sample. Set five watches to the correct time, note the deviation at day zero, and check again at day thirty against a reference clock. A quartz movement should hold within about 15 seconds a month at normal temperature. A watch that loses a minute or more, or whose seconds hand starts jumping two at a time, is drawing more than its measured current suggested.

Check the gaskets at the same time. A dry, compressed or mis-seated gasket passes the day-one pressure test and fails after a month of the case being opened and closed, which is exactly what happens in retail.

Put the current, the cell and the pressure test on the order

A purchase order that says "quartz lady watch, 2-year battery" cannot be checked by anyone. One that says "average standby current under 2 µA measured on five pieces, SR626SW silver oxide, 3 bar static hold for 10 minutes, thirty-day deviation under 15 seconds" gives the factory three numbers to hit and gives you three numbers to reject against.

Keep the five measured watches and the readings with the approved sample. Browse the women's watch category to see which case and movement combinations the current range uses, then ask for the current reading on your chosen movement before the gift box artwork is printed.
